Empathy (2021)

Zoey Singh
This artwork serves as a poignant exploration of empathy, drawing inspiration from personal experiences and insights shared by a dear friend. Six years ago, during a weekly meditation session, a fellow Waiohua flattie named Lex articulated a powerful vision of empathy. He described it as "Two masks evoking deep anguish, crying tears into each other symbolising empathy between and for others around us." Intrigued by Lex's profound depiction, I integrated it into this piece, titled ‘Empathy’.

Viewers are invited to delve into the intricate layers of human connection. Through the symbolism of two masks, each representing the depths of human emotion, the artwork captures the essence of empathy—a profound understanding and shared experience of both joy and pain.

As the masks intertwine, tears flowing between them, the artwork speaks to the interconnectedness of our emotions and experiences. It serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy in fostering compassion and connection in our relationships with others.

Empathy invites viewers to reflect on their own capacity for empathy and the transformative power of understanding and shared emotion. It is a testament to the beauty and complexity of human connection, encapsulating the essence of empathy in its raw and authentic form.
